Palo Alto, CA - November 18, 2008 - Blue Vector Systems today announced the release of its platform and software development kit (SDK) for third parties to develop industry- and customer-specific solutions. Available in the first quarter of 2009, version 5.0 of the Blue Vector Platform-a software platform for sensing and responding to the movement and condition of products, people, places, and assets at the operational edge of business-will be made available to an initial set of the company’s systems integration and consulting partners. The company will also release a SDK for those partners to create solutions on top of the platform.
Based on a robust, mature platform with several years of proven success in large-scale, production environments, the new release features enhanced high availability features, security capabilities such as more granular access control, and augmentations to its integration framework, among other enhancements. The platform harnesses Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP), a software development paradigm that was co-invented by company founder, Anurag Mendhekar. Mendhekar and his colleagues developed the paradigm while at the famed Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), in response to the U.S. military’s need for software to flexibly integrate and control massively distributed networks of sensor nodes in ever-changing battlefield situations.
Transcending the limitations of traditional software development, Blue Vector’s platform was designed to enable networks to effortlessly scale-regardless of how large and complex they grow as users add new nodes, hardware, and business rules. Blue Vector’s use of AOP allows each “aspect” of a problem-such as situation-specific business rules or the processes governing data sharing with other systems-to be considered and configured independently by the user. The system then examines interdependencies and “weaves” together the aspects to generate code images (each of which may be unique) for each distributed node in a network. When any aspect of the system needs to be modified, the system-rather than the user—determines the impacts of any changes throughout the network and reweaves required code changes. Because the system is designed to manage the complicated interdependencies and side effects of modifications, users can focus on generating desired outcomes and scaling the system with unparalleled speed and flexibility.
Enabling third parties to solve new problems requiring this unique software distribution paradigm and sense and respond capability, the SDK will provide them with specific instructions and examples to enable them to write new business logic, create custom user interfaces, and build integration adapters, as well as will offer debugging tools and procedures.
“Our partners have pulled us into a range of opportunities, from tracking explosives and apparel to distributing software to diverse endpoints, proving that our technology is relevant across a wide range of applications,” commented Blue Vector CEO Mike Gardner. “We’ve developed the first distributed processing platform for industrial applications where the cost of change is almost completely independent of the size or diversity of the system. By opening this platform to our partners, we can drastically accelerate the creation of new and powerful solutions based on these core capabilities.”
